The centreline of the moon's shadow passes over Upper Egypt -- through Luxor and the Nile Valley -- well to the south of Cairo. Most of the capital, including the Giza Plateau, will experience a deep partial eclipse with roughly 95 percent of the sun's disc covered. That is spectacular in its own right, but it is not totality.

That is the difference between partial and total, and it is the difference between a good experience and a once-in-a-lifetime one.
"Eclipse Over the Pyramids" -- The Truth
The image of a black sun hanging over the Great Pyramid is irresistible. You will see it on magazine covers and social media posts for the next year. Some of those images will be composites; others will be real photographs of the deep partial eclipse that Giza will experience. Either way, they will be beautiful.
What they will not show you is the corona, because the Giza Plateau does not receive true totality. The Pyramids are roughly 30 km north of the eclipse path's northern edge. Getting from Cairo to Totality
The centreline of totality passes through Luxor, roughly 650 km south of Cairo. There are two practical ways to get there on eclipse morning, and we handle both end-to-end. Domestic Flight (Our Standard): Cairo to Luxor is a 1-hour flight on EgyptAir. We pre-book seats months in advance to guarantee availability on eclipse morning. You depart Cairo early, arrive in Luxor mid-morning, and are positioned at the viewing site well before first contact at ~12:00 PM. Return flight the same evening. Overnight Sleeper Train: For guests on the longer Cairo & Nile Cruise package, we use a combination of the overnight train or a flight on Day 4 to reach Luxor with time to settle in before eclipse day.
